What are Macros?
It’s always a victory for me when I “Hit my Macros”!!! What that means, is that I am spot on for my recommended daily carbs, fats and proteins. The protein is always the most important, as I want to conserve as much muscle mass as possible and also build as well. Also, I am aiming for about 35% of the day to be healthy fats. I have never really worried about fats because the fats I consume are olive or coconut oil, avocados, almonds and eggs. It’s hard to even consider those fats, as “fat” gets such a bad rep! The carbs for me can fluctuate depending on which vegetables or fruits I am consuming that day. My body responds well to lower carb days when I’m focusing on fat loss, and I never really get below 60 grams.
Depending on what you want to achieve whether it’s building muscle, maintenance, or fat loss, you play around with percentages and also different foods that fit each category.
So what ARE Macros? The 3 Basic Macro-nutrients (Taken from my book “Food For You”)
Protein: Proteins are the main building blocks of the body. They're used to make muscles, tendons, organs and skin. Proteins are also used to make enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and various tiny molecules that serve many important functions. Proteins are also slow digesting, so they keep us full longer.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are the body's main source of fuel. Carbohydrates are easily used by the body for energy. All of the tissues and cells in our body can use glucose for energy. Carbohydrates are needed for the central nervous system, the kidneys, the brain, the muscles (including the heart) to function properly. Overconsumption of these however can cause insulin spike and turn these carbohydrates into fat in the body if not burned off.
Fats: Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell growth. They also help protect your organs and help keep your body warm. Fats help your bodies absorb nutrients and produce important hormones, too. Your body definitely needs fat for survival.
