Gosh, it’s that time of year. From Thanksgiving on can become such a spiral downhill. The pie, the cookies, the pumpkin spice lattes to the peppermint lattes, the holiday parties to the parties that YOUR hosting. Oh, and don’t forget, that goes straight into New Years’ where you’ll be having a few cocktails as well!! (Insert scared emoji)
So…. What the heck can we do about it?
5 Tips and Tricks to Beat the Holiday Bulge
1. Drink a TON of water! This will help flush out the sludge, sugar, excess salt and other bad decisions you’ve made. The less you hydrate the MORE you bloat! Fancy that, you’d think it would be the other way around. Aim for ½ your body weight in ounces of water a day. A 140 pound person should be drinking 70 oz or 8.75 (9 glasses) of water a day.
2. Eat plenty of protein and fat! Yes, you heard me. These will keep you nourished and FULL. If you eat or drink some holiday sugar treats you’ll not only spike your blood sugar and turn on the fat storage mode, but you’ll be craving MORE + not full, which will cause you to want more. So, if you’re at the holiday party, choose the meat and veggie trays and not the sugary sweets.
3. Exercise Daily! I know that sounds like beating the dead horse, but once in the habit, you’ll be less likely to steer off course, lose motivation, put on weight or get depressed. Exercise releases Endorphins which make you happy. So be EXTRA happy this holiday season with yourself and your body.
4. Plan and Prep your meals! We get that you are super busy around the holidays. Travel, buying Christmas gifts, wrapping, sending packages, kids, end of the year work projects, etc. If you forget to plan and prep your meals, you will be spending MORE money than you want and more likely to make last minute fast food bad decisions. Take an hour on Sunday to prep for Monday - Wednesday, and Wednesday or Thursday morning for an hour to get meals ready for the rest of your week. Your wallet and waistline will thank you!
5. Eat a ton of green vegetables! This will constantly be detoxing your body. Spinach, kale, asparagus, avocados, green onions, cilantro, bell peppers, etc. Vegetables have all the antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals but won’t jack up blood sugar or insulin like fruit will. How can you put ON weight if you’re cleaning out your body at the same time? You can’t feel too guilty about one or two treats if you enjoyed a couple salads, fish and veggies that same day.
